Ashuganj Food Grain Silo


Ashuganj Silo, one of the biggest silos of Ministry of food and Disaster Management is situated at the point where the main line of the Eastern railway between Dhaka and Chittagong crosses the bridge over the Meghna River. Capacity of the silo is 50,000 MT. The main silo consists of 48 circular bins, and the hade house, which main food grain handling machinery. Basically the internal operation of the silo at Ashuganj is to receive the food grain, clean and fumigate it if necessary, keep it in storage and transfer same from one bin to another, then ship out in bag or in bulk by means of rail wagon, trucks, boats and barges. Construction of this silo was started during 1967 and completed in 1971. The consultant of this project was Weitz-Hettlesater Engineers. U.S.A. Mechanical and Electrical Equipments supplied by Miag Buhler, a joint venture of Germany and Switzerland. Electrical Equipments supplied by Lau Knudsen Denmark and Civil Construction completed by Skanska Cemen geteriate, Sweden.
