Natural Gas is the main raw material for Urea manufacturing and basic components for production of Urea, Ammonia, and Carbon dioxide, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen. First of all Natural Gas is cracked by steam in the primary and Secondary Reformers to produce Carbon monoxide, Carbon dioxide and Hydrogen.
Moreover, air is added to the Secondary Reformer as source of Nitrogen. Carbon monoxide is converted to Carbon dioxide in the Shift Converters and Carbon dioxide is separated from the gas steam in the Carbon dioxide removal plant and sent to Urea plant under high pressure. Remaining components of the gas i. e. nitrogen and hydrogen react together under high pressure and temperature in presence of Fecatalyst to form Ammonia. This ammonia and carbon dioxide then react together under controlled temperature and pressure to produce urea. The prilled urea is bagged in 50 Kg content polythene inserted jute bag and delivered to the distributors by Barge, Truck and Rail/Wagons from the factory premises.BRIF HISTORY OF ZFCL:For construction of a fertilizer plant at Ashuganj was first examined in 1969-70 and a feasibility study of the project was approved in 1975. The main contractor was Foster Wheeler Limited (UK) and plant commissioning was performed on 15th December 1981.
The project was eventually handed over to the state owned Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) on the 1st December 1983 as per decision of the government. Since then,
Zia Fertilizer Company Limited (formerly Ashuganj Fertilizer & Chemical Company) has been operated as an enterprise of BCIC. Commercial production of the factory was started from 1st July 1983.
